Clinical efficacy and safety of oral ciprofloxacin in the treatment of reapiratory infections

Abstract
Ciprofloxacin is a new quinolone, which has broad antimicrobial activity against gram positive and gram negative organisms, including Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Serratia, Hemophilus influenzae.and methiciilin-resistant -Staphylococcus aureus. Its pharmacologic aspects afteoral adft istration are distribution to all body compartments, high levels in pulmonary, bronchial tissue, and intracellular penetration into phagocytic cells.
We studied the clinical efficacy and safety of oral administration of ciprofloxacin in 20 patients with various respiratory infections.
The bacteriologic response rates were 86% in P. aeruginosa, 100% in K. pneumoniae, H. influenzae and Serratia marcescens, and 66% in S.pneumoniae. The overall response rates were 82% in patients with pneumonia, 80% in bronchitis, 50% in bronchiectasis and lung abscess.
The drug was well tolerated, though minor complaints, such as nausea and headache, were present in one patient respectively. Mild decrease of hemoglobin concentration was noted in one patient, but clinically it was not significant.
